The Aveloor difference
Most cheap "silk" is thin 16 to 19 momme, a lower fibre grade, or satin polyester made to look shiny. Aveloor is dense 22-momme mulberry silk in Grade 6A, the longest and most uniform fibre grade, silk on both sides, and OEKO-TEX certified, so it keeps its finish wash after wash instead of pilling in months.
What the research says
Dermatology research points to two mechanisms: friction and moisture. A rough, absorbent surface drags on skin and hair for eight hours a night and wicks away the moisture and skincare they need. A smooth, low-absorbency silk surface reduces both. That is why dermatologists recommend silk for sleep creases, frizz and sensitive skin.

Clinical research
  • Independent lab testing at TRI Princeton measured a lower friction coefficient between silk and hair than between cotton and hair, the mechanism behind less breakage, tangling and frizz.
  • A 2019 clinical trial found silk fabric gentle enough for eczema-prone and sensitive skin, effective as a non-drug approach (Dermatology Reports).
  • Published testing found cotton absorbs more water than silk and moves it away faster, which is why cotton bedding can dry out hair and skin overnight (European Journal of Applied Physiology).

Findings are from independent published research on silk fabric.

For your skin

Skincare that works while you sleep

You spend 8 hours a night with your face pressed into your pillowcase. Cotton is an absorbent fibre; it rubs and wicks serum and moisturiser off your skin overnight. Silk's smooth, low-absorbency surface keeps more of your skincare where you put it, with no creases pressed into your face by morning.

For your hair

Wake up to better hair days

Friction from cotton pillowcases causes breakage, creasing and frizz overnight. Aveloor's 22 momme mulberry silk is naturally smooth and gentle. Your hair glides instead of catching, so you wake up with softer, smoother hair that's easier to style.

Good to know

Your questions, answered

The silk

Is this real silk or polyester satin?
Real silk. 100% mulberry silk, no polyester, no blend. A lot of "silk" pillowcases on the market are actually satin, which is a weave, not a fibre, usually made from polyester made to look shiny. Ours is the real fibre, silk on both sides.
What does 22-momme, Grade 6A actually mean, and why does it matter?
Momme measures how dense the silk is; ours is 22-momme, heavier than the thin 16 to 19 momme used in most cheap "silk." Grade 6A is the highest fibre grade, the longest and most uniform strands. Together they're why it holds its finish and doesn't pill after a few months, unlike thinner or lower-grade silk.
Is the pillowcase silk on both sides?
Yes. Some pillowcases only put silk on the side facing up and back it with a cheaper fabric. Ours is silk on both sides, so it doesn't matter which way you put it on.
Is it OEKO-TEX certified? Free from harmful chemicals?
Yes, OEKO-TEX certified. That means it's been independently tested for harmful substances, so what's against your skin all night is just silk.
Will it feel hot or sweaty to sleep on?
No. Silk is a natural, breathable fibre that regulates temperature rather than trapping heat the way synthetic satin does. Most people find it feels cool against the skin, especially compared to cotton.

Skin & hair

Will it actually help my skin?
Silk is smoother than cotton, so there's less friction between your face and the fabric overnight, and it doesn't pull moisture out of your skin the way absorbent cotton does. That's the honest mechanism: less friction, less moisture loss. It's also why dermatologists commonly recommend silk for sleep creases and sensitive skin. Results vary person to person, but the physics of what it's doing while you sleep don't.
What does it do for hair?
The same smooth surface that's gentler on skin is gentler on hair. Cotton grips and tugs at strands as you move, which is what causes tangles, frizz and breakage overnight. Silk lets hair glide instead, so you wake up with less of that damage to brush out.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Generally yes. Silk is a natural protein fibre that's hypoallergenic and doesn't hold onto dust mites, oils or bacteria the way cotton does, which matters if your skin reacts easily. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, it's worth checking with your dermatologist, but for most sensitive skin, silk is one of the gentler options you can sleep on.

Fit & care

Will it fit my pillow?
It's one size, made to fit standard and queen pillows, which covers most pillows in most homes. King pillows are longer, so we don't recommend it for those. Check our size guide if you're not sure which you have.
Can I machine wash it?
Yes. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside a mesh bag.
What detergent should I use?
A mild detergent, nothing with bleach. Harsh detergents break down the protein fibres over time.
How often should I wash it?
About once a week is a good rhythm for most people, more often if you use active skincare overnight or tend to sweat.
Should I wash it before first use?
It's ready to sleep on straight out of the box, but a first gentle wash never hurts if you'd rather.
Can I iron it?
Yes, on low heat, and iron it inside out to protect the surface.
How long will it last?
Cared for properly, cold wash, no bleach, no tumble dry, a 22-momme Grade 6A pillowcase like ours holds its feel and finish for years, well past the point cheaper silk or satin starts thinning and pilling.

Orders & delivery

Do you ship to my country? How long does delivery take?
We ship worldwide, to over 150 countries, and every order is tracked end to end. Orders leave our dispatch within 2 to 3 business days. From there, Asia-Pacific runs 5 to 10 business days, and the Americas and Europe run 6 to 15 business days. Peak periods can add another 5 to 10 days.
How do I track my order?
You'll get a tracking email the moment your order dispatches, with a link to follow it the whole way.
Will I pay customs or import fees?
Most small parcels clear without any extra charge, but customs and duties outside Australia are set by your destination country, not by us, so on rare occasions you may be charged on delivery. Full details are on our shipping page.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes, Afterpay is available at checkout, split into 4 interest-free payments.

The trial

What if it's not for me?
You get 90 days. Sleep on it, wash it, live with it. If it's genuinely not for you, send it back for a full refund, no risk.
Why do people buy more than one?
One for rotation while the other's in the wash, one for a partner, one for travel; most people who try silk end up wanting it on every pillow, not just one. Bundle pricing applies automatically at checkout when you add more than one, so buying a set costs less per pillowcase than buying separately.
